An Unsolicited Serenade
Live at RESIS Festival by Arditti Quartet (World Premiere, May. 31. 2024)
written for Arditti Quartet
This work is a direct sequel to my older string quartet, aus allen Sternen in die Einsamkeit (2023).
The piece emerges from the concept of the traditional Serenade: a musical performance or composition given in honor of someone, traditionally sung or played outdoors at night, is inherently unsolicited. The music was played on string instruments usually after 18th century (as you can see in namely the Mozart's Serenade from Don Giovanni) but in a very sweet and polite tone. And the piece ends in that manner too.
I juxtaposed and combined the three different pieces of music of three distinct characters. The first one being pensive yet sparkling, second one brutal, and then the last one being violently neutral and very ambiguous. The distance between these three pieces get closer and closer to the point they get in the way of each other, and ultimately makes peace in a very strange way in the end.
Coincidentally, this piece might be the implication of how the love is like. Such bizarre, unnatural, and contrived emotions that visit us unsolicitedly at some point of our lives, and lead us to irrational decisions and rash judgements. Yet we welcome them and celebrate in many ways. In this piece, (even though so lately) I reflect myself in the midst of the experiences of love (not only erotic nor platonic) and ruminate upon how raw these emotions are - although I got to appreciate its beauty so late.
